Nigerian American Public Affairs Commitee (NAPAC) Maryland has a mission to engage, inform, and empower Nigerian Americans in-state and across Washington D.C. Maryland and Virginia (DMV). Our chapter will achieve this through advocacy and policy impact in key sectors such as education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment. We will take effective steps in mobilizing our community to engage in the local, state, and federal process. Conducting research, creating forums for policy discussion as well as debates, and taking positions on issues that directly or indirectly impact the Nigerian American community as well as the larger African diaspora community.
Alongside working diligently to foster deeper civic engagement between members of the Nigerian American diaspora community will share vital information many are unaware about such as Maryland’s Sister State Initiative. Providing education on key government policies and acts that benefit all Maryland citizens and advocating for Nigerians in diaspora and globally.
Data shows that the DMV has the highest concentration of Nigerian residents in the USA. Apart from Maryland’s proximity to the halls of political power in Washington D.C. there is a Sister State initiative in place between Maryland state government and Nigeria. NAPAC Maryland chapter will rally the industrious and illustrious members of our community to foster capacity development in key sectors with revitalization goals.
Fact: Prince George’s (PG) county has the highest settlement of Nigerians in Maryland.
In 2022, a record number of political contestants of Nigerian heritage ran in the mid-term elections in Maryland. We now have two councilwomen in PG County, one councilman in Montgomery County, and committee-at-large party official in Anner Arundel County.
